MIKKY EKKO — PULL ME DOWN

MikkyEkkoLong time no blog, huh? Final papers, projects, scheduling flights, and holidays seem to have distracted me from one of my favorite hobbies: sharing some awesome tunes.

Singer Mikky Ekko pours his entire heart in this beautifully produced track (Clams Casino, obvi), urging the object of affection to ‘pull him down.’ A song about young rebelling love, there is a slow rock quality that runs so smoothly with these moments of lusty R&B. This is a perfect winter song, for those cold lonely evenings sitting in a coffee shop. (Cliché? Bite me.) Free download from his SoundCloud.

SEA WOLF — OLD WORLD ROMANCE

Boy, am I late to review my favorite albums of the fall! Sea Wolf’s Old World Romance has been streaming via Rdio for a while, and I give it a solid 10. Maybe I’m being too generous with my rating, but I have been craving some classy indie, folksy indie rock and I’ve been rockin’ out to ‘Saint Catherine St’ and ‘Miracle Cure’. ‘Changing Seasons’ is that song everyone needs just to be reminded that change is always happening, and man, that’s okay. Listen via SoundCloud, or buy the album like I did!

SHINY TOY GUNS — FADING LISTENING

I was approximately 17 years old when I fell in love with Shiny Toy Guns’ ‘Le Disko,’ a very Euro grunge, pop song a la The Lovemakers. It’s been years since I’ve even though of them and they have recently released a single that is the complete opposite. It’s a catchy tune with some fantastic falsettos and mellow synths. I think I have some good reason to investigate more of their music. Smooth.

SEA WOLF — PRISCILLA

I am so darn excited about Sea Wolf’s new album (dropping Sept. 11). As I’ve mentioned, I wasn’t a fan of his last project, but with the slow teasing releases of ‘Old World Romance’ tracks, I’m getting more and more excited. A teaser of a song titled ‘Priscilla’ is on YouTube but the song is officially streaming on a Black Book Magazine web article. He returns to his earthy and rustic tones, highlighting these gorgeous, mellow guitar riffs. He sings “What’s it for?” with desperation and swelling string instruments and guitar in the background. I cannot wait to buy this as soon as it’s out. Click here for the stream.

MUMFORD AND SONS — I WILL WAIT

Mumford & Sons rocked the folk out of everyone with their first album ‘Sigh No More’ and there’s no doubt that people are waiting on the edges of their seats for their next one ‘Babel.’ Luckily, our M&S cravings can be momentarily satisfied with their release of the beautiful, upbeat, and spiritual song ‘I Will Wait.’ If Wash U. had any idea what ‘alternative rock’ band to bring for the JOKE of a concert WILD has become, they’ll try their bestest to bring M&S. Enjoy.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB — SLEEP ALONE

Two Door Cinema Club — one of the funnest bands to listen to. I missed out on seeing them live last year and I heard they performed with plenty of energy. They’ve posted a new single on their SoundCloud called ‘Sleep Alone’ which is a strong track coming off their first album. It’s catchy, whimsical, youthful, and just plain fun. Enjoy!

STARS — HOLD ON WHEN YOU GET LOVE AND LET GO WHEN YOU GIVE IT

I am school girl giddy after hearing this newly released track from Stars’ upcoming album The North. First of all, I’m in love with the song title. I have trouble enjoying long titles a la Sufjan Stevens or Of Montreal, but this is just clear cut and straightforward. ‘Hold On When You Get Love and Let go When You Give It’ is a modern celebration of love with a killer drum set and silky vocals. I may have to pre-order the album, but this is going on my list of music to purchase, in addition to Macklemore’s album The Heist.
